DA-006
The Shifting Glass: Medium
Secure Containment Guidelines:
DA-006 is to be contained within a climate-controlled, soundproof chamber at Site-██. The containment area must be equipped with 24/7 monitoring by both visual surveillance and auditory sensors, as the anomalous effects of DA-006 are known to disrupt normal sensory perception when within close proximity.
Access to DA-006 is restricted to Level 4 personnel only. Any interaction or research on DA-006 must be authorised by the Site Director, and no direct handling is allowed without proper protective gear, including auditory-blocking earphones.
Personnel entering the containment chamber must undergo a psychological evaluation before and after exposure to DA-006, as long-term exposure to its effects may induce severe cognitive dissonance or sensory hallucinations.
Description:
DA-006, designated The Shifting Mirage, appears as a small, unremarkable glass ornament measuring approximately 15 centimetres in height. The object's form is an abstract geometric pattern—alternating segments of shifting translucent and opaque materials, with jagged edges resembling broken glass. It has no clear internal components, though closer inspection reveals subtle movements within the ornament, even when still.
The primary anomalous property of DA-006 manifests when it is within the field of vision of any living being. The object appears to constantly alter its form, transitioning between several distinct, complex visual patterns that seem to merge, split, or evolve in real time. However, any attempts to describe the exact sequence or form of the shifts result in cognitive dissonance and memory lapse. Individuals who observe DA-006 for prolonged periods report a sensation of unease, followed by a strong compulsion to look away.
-
Visual Distortion: Upon observing DA-006, the object appears to fluctuate in shape and colour. Patterns shift from geometric to organic forms, often mimicking natural phenomena (e.g., clouds, waves, foliage). Any attempt to record or photograph the object results in blank or corrupted footage, further enhancing the object's illusory nature.
-
Perceptual Distortion: Prolonged exposure (more than 15 minutes) induces a sensation of being "out of sync" with one's surroundings. Individuals report a temporary loss of depth perception, with objects in the environment appearing to "fold" or "flatten" in irregular patterns. These distortions seem localised to the observer's immediate vicinity but can cause significant disorientation.
-
Psychological Effects: Direct exposure to DA-006 over extended periods has caused temporary psychotic episodes in some personnel, manifesting as intense hallucinations. Affected individuals have reported "following" the object's shifting patterns mentally, sometimes leading them to seek further exposure to the object. The object seems to have a psychological pull that compels further interaction despite its disturbing effects.
-
Soundless Influence: Interestingly, DA-006 does not emit any discernible sound when viewed, but subjects often report auditory hallucinations during or after exposure. These can range from vague whispering noises to full-fledged conversations, often in an unknown language. Psychological tests on these auditory perceptions reveal they may be tied to the individual's own subconscious fears or desires, suggesting DA-006 has some kind of empathetic link to the observer's mind.
